About these dinosaur coloring pages

This page mixes plain dinosaur portraits with little story scenes. The plain ones show one dinosaur and almost nothing else, often in side view so the shape of each kind is easy to read: the long neck of a brachiosaurus, the armored back and tail club of an ankylosaurus, the curved head crest of a parasaurolophus, the tall back sail of a spinosaurus and the domed skull of a pachycephalosaurus. A chubby baby triceratops, a waving T-rex and a sitting stegosaurus have oversized heads and wide grins for the youngest colorers, and two pages are about eggs, with a baby poking out of its shell. The scene pages hand each dinosaur a job: stirring cookie dough, beating a drum, fishing at a pond, pulling a wagon of leaves, blowing bubbles, weaving a flower garland or sitting down to a checkered picnic. A pteranodon appears both perched and flying with a flower in its beak. Bodies carry spots, stripes and back plates, which leaves plenty of room for patterns.

Coloring tips

  • Nobody knows the true colors of most dinosaurs, so borrow from living reptiles and birds: greens, browns, grays and sandy tans with a lighter belly.
  • Color the stegosaurus plates, triceratops frill and ankylosaurus armor a shade darker than the body so the bony parts stand out.
  • On the spotted long-necked dinosaurs, fill the body first and dot in the spots afterward with a darker or contrasting marker.
  • For a classroom, hand out different species and have each child look up what their dinosaur ate before choosing its colors.

Is a pteranodon a dinosaur?

No. Pteranodon was a flying reptile called a pterosaur, a close relative that lived in the same era as the dinosaurs. It sits on this page because it shared their world, not because it was one of them.

What colors were dinosaurs really?
