About these fall coloring pages

Autumn on this page comes in two very different moods. The simple half is made of smiling characters on a white page: an oak leaf beside an acorn, a lone maple leaf, two acorns leaning shoulder to shoulder, a pear next to an apple, a basket of apples with faces and a squirrel hugging its acorn. These have thick outlines and almost nothing in the background. The detailed half fills the sheet from edge to edge for adults and older teens. There is a wreath of oak leaves around an apple basket, an owl framed by an oval of tiny leaves, a fox asleep on a fringed blanket, pumpkins buried in sunflowers, a tea table with cinnamon sticks, a wheelbarrow heaped with pumpkins and corn, a cottage between leafy trees and a river valley with geese overhead. Several subjects appear in both halves, so a parent and child can color the same thing side by side: a squirrel with an acorn, pumpkins, mushrooms, an umbrella in the rain. Acorns and fallen leaves are scattered through almost every detailed design as small fill shapes.

Coloring tips

  • Real maple leaves run from yellow through orange to deep red, often on one leaf, so try blending two of those colors outward from the stem.
  • Oak leaves tend to turn russet and brown rather than bright red; saving your browns for oak leaves and acorns keeps them apart from the maples.
  • On the crowded harvest designs, color every pumpkin first, then the sunflowers, then the leaves, so each repeated shape gets one consistent color before you move on.
  • Acorns are green while they grow and brown once they fall; making the textured cap a shade darker than the nut helps it stand out.
  • In the river landscape, keep the far hills and trees pale and grayish and save the strongest color for the leaves at the front.

Questions about fall coloring pages

What colors should I use for fall coloring pages?

Warm reds, oranges, yellows and browns cover most of autumn, with a dull green for leaves that have not turned yet. The pumpkins, sunflowers and maple leaves here all suit that palette, and the rainy-day designs give a reason to add gray and blue.

Are there fall coloring pages for adults?

Yes. The detailed designs, such as the harvest wreath, the owl in its leaf frame and the river landscape, are drawn for adults and older teens, with fine lines and many small spaces.

Can I use these for Thanksgiving?

The harvest designs with pumpkins, corn, gourds and apples suit a Thanksgiving table or a November craft, since they show the harvest rather than Halloween. There are no turkeys or pilgrims on this page.
