About these ocean coloring pages

This page brings together two quite different kinds of ocean art. About half is mermaids for kids: smiling girls with long wavy hair and scaly tails, drawn either alone with plenty of open white space or in fuller underwater scenes with seaweed, shells and bubbles. In those scenes a mermaid swims with a sea turtle, meets a seahorse nose to nose, plays with a dolphin, greets a striped fish, sits on a clam-shell throne, waters a sea garden from a spiral shell or peeks through a ship's porthole. The rest is realistic sea life drawn for older colorers. Sea turtles drift over coral, through kelp and under a reef arch; a great white, a whale shark, a reef shark and a hammerhead glide over the seabed; humpback whales dive, one beside its calf; and a lionfish, an angelfish, a clownfish in its anemone and a seahorse by a sea fan fill the reef pages. Those reef pages are packed with coral, shells and patterned fins, while a pair of grown-up mermaids sits between the two styles.

Coloring tips

  • For water, start light near the top of the page and press harder toward the seabed so the scene looks deeper.
  • Leave every bubble white, or add only a thin light-blue rim, so they still read as air.
  • Living coral comes in tans, browns and greens as well as pinks and purples, so mixing a few muted shades with one bright one looks natural.
  • On a mermaid tail, color each row of scales in a slightly different shade of one color for a shimmering look.
  • When a parent and child color together, pair an easy mermaid with one of the sea turtle pages so both of you finish a sea scene.

Questions about ocean coloring pages

Are the mermaids from a movie?

No. All the mermaids here are original designs, not characters from films or shows, so you can give them any hair and tail colors you like.

What sea animals can I color on this page?

Sea turtles, a great white shark, a whale shark, a reef shark, a hammerhead, humpback whales, a lionfish, an angelfish, a clownfish, seahorses, a dolphin, starfish and small reef fish.

What color is real coral?

Living coral ranges from brown, tan and green to pink, purple, orange and yellow, much of it from tiny algae living inside. Coral that turns white has usually lost those algae through stress, which is called bleaching.
