About these fantasy coloring pages

Three kinds of imaginary creature share this page: unicorns, dragons and mermaids. The unicorns are foals with long curly manes and spiral horns, either alone on a white page (under a rainbow, peeking out of a cardboard box, sitting in a crescent moon, beside a spotted mushroom) or in cute scenes such as roller skating between cones, sipping at a tea table or painting a rainbow at an easel. The dragons cover the widest range. Baby dragons with plain wings sit beside eggs, balls and hearts; a busier set has them sailing, flying kites and reading; and the mandala dragons for older colorists are packed with scales, lotus petals, crystals and moon phases. The mermaids have long flowing hair and fish tails. The busier ones swim among seaweed, coral, bubbles and shells with a sea turtle, seahorse or dolphin nearby, while the easy ones float on an open page holding a shell, a pearl or a starfish. Two mermaids are drawn in a more grown-up style for adults. Everything is original art, so there are no film or game characters here.

Coloring tips

  • Give each creature its own palette: pastels for unicorns, greens and teals for mermaid tails, and bolder reds, purples or golds for dragons.
  • Unicorn horns are drawn as a twisted spiral; coloring alternate bands in two shades makes the twist show.
  • Fantasy frees you from real-world colors: a pink sky, a purple dragon or a gold mane all work, as long as shapes that touch have contrasting colors.
  • In the busy undersea scenes, color the mermaid first and the seaweed and bubbles last, so she stays the center of the picture.
