About these bird coloring pages

Two very different birds share this page, and seeing them side by side shows how differently feathers can be drawn. The parrots are slim and upright, with hooked beaks, small crests and long tail feathers trailing below the perch; their wings are split into rows of long, separate feathers. The owls are round and compact, with huge eyes, short beaks and ear tufts, and their chests are covered in little U-shaped scallops that repeat like a pattern. On the easy pages both birds sit or stand alone on a branch, a rock or a tree stump, sometimes with a butterfly, an acorn or a crescent moon nearby. The scene pages add a daily activity: a parrot paints at an easel or splashes in a bath, while an owl reads on a stump, waters flowers or looks through a telescope. There are pairs of both birds sitting on branches, a baby parrot hatching, a chick in a nest with eggs, and owls bundled in scarves for chilly weather.

Coloring tips

  • Use bold, bright markers on the parrots and softer browns, tans and creams on the owls, so the two kinds of bird look different when shown together.
  • Owl chests are made of small scallops: color every other row a little darker to get a speckled, feathery look.
  • Parrots lay plain white eggs in real life, so the eggs in the nest scene can stay white with a touch of gray shadow.
  • For a bird lesson, put a parrot page next to an owl page and compare beaks, eyes, tails and feet before anyone starts coloring.
