About these parrot coloring pages

The parrots here share one look: a big hooked beak, a crest of feathers on the head, layered wing feathers drawn as separate scallops, and long tail feathers that reach down past the feet. That makes each bird a ready-made color chart. The plainer pages show a single parrot standing, chirping on a bare branch, sitting on a wooden swing, sleeping with its head tucked into its shoulder, or tilting its head at you; a few add one thing to hold or stand beside, such as a fruit wedge, a five-petal flower, a split tropical leaf or a shallow bowl. Wings spread wide on a couple of them, and one baby is just breaking out of its egg. The scene pages give the bird a pastime: threading beads, painting at an easel, sharing tea at a little table, arranging long feathers in a vase, playing a tambourine, peering into a lunch box or splashing in a bath. Hibiscus flowers frame one perched parrot, and a fluffy chick sits in a woven nest with eggs.

Coloring tips

  • A scarlet macaw is mostly red, with a yellow band on the wings and blue flight feathers and tail tips; a blue-and-gold macaw is blue on top and golden yellow underneath.
  • Many parrots, such as Amazon parrots, are mainly green with patches of red, yellow or blue on the head and wings.
  • Color the wing feathers row by row, going from a light shade near the shoulder to a deeper one at the tips.
  • Beaks are usually gray, black or pale ivory and the feet are gray, so keep those parts plain and let the feathers carry the color.

Questions about parrot coloring pages

What colors are real parrots?

Many are bright green, and macaws mix red, blue and yellow. Cockatoos are white, pink, gray or black, so any parrot here can be colored after a real species you like.

Are these parrots macaws or cockatoos?

They are cartoon parrots with the long tail of a macaw and a small crest like a cockatoo's. Real macaws have no crest and real cockatoos have shorter tails, so choose one and color the bird that way.

How do parrots hold their food?

Real parrots have two toes pointing forward and two pointing back, so they can grip a branch and lift food to the beak with one foot. On these pages they hold things with a wing instead, like the parrot with the fruit wedge.
