About these axolotl coloring pages

These axolotls all share the same friendly body plan: a wide round head, frilly gills fanning out on both sides, short legs with little fingers, and a long flat tail. The simplest pages show that body with very little else. One faces you head-on, one glides along in side view the way a real axolotl swims, one sleeps curled into a crescent, and a tiny pair face each other across the middle of the page. Others hug a single object to their bellies, such as a ball, a heart or a pebble, or sit inside a scallop shell, under a wide lily leaf, or next to a snail with a spiral shell. The scene pages are busier and turn the axolotl into a character: it pours tea on a lily pad, mixes batter in a chef hat, lines up seashells on a rock, swings in a hammock tied to seaweed, reads on a stone, plays a drum, paints pebbles and peeks through a round coral arch. Bubbles and water plants drift through many of them.

Coloring tips

  • Wild axolotls are dark olive, brown or gray with black speckles and a few gold flecks; the pale pink ones most people picture are pet color forms.
  • Pet axolotls also come in golden, white with pink eyes, and almost black, so each axolotl on the page can be a different real color.
  • On pale axolotls the gills look red or deep pink because blood shows through the thin skin, so color the feathery fringe darker than the gill stalks.
  • Keep the tail fin a lighter shade than the body, since a real fin is thin and slightly see-through at the edge.
